Are you a student, post-doc or staff working at a UK University interested in medical writing and communications?
The North West Biotech Initiative and VMLY&Rx invite you to apply to our first Medical and Scientific Communication Competition! Where you will submit a set of slides using our brief and get the chance to win up to £600 cash prize and a chance to attend a professional workshop at the VMLY&Rx offices. At the workshop qualifying candidates will have the opportunity to learn from expert medical writers and strategists to develop essential medical communication skills by working side-by-side with them to produce materials for use by a patient group. The workshop will be held in VMLY&Rx’s office in Manchester in late January 2022 (exact date to be agreed with qualifying candidates).
The Brief
What is the current standard of care and future of first-line therapy for triple-negative metastatic breast cancer (TNBC)?
A key goal of medical and scientific communication is to ensure that clinicians and patients are informed about diseases, the recommended treatment options, and the evidence supporting them. The task is to create a short slide deck to educate clinicians and patients about recommended first-line treatment options for metastatic germine BRCA1/2 mutated or PD-L1 positive TNBC.
1) Prepare up to five slides (not including title and divider slides) to communicate the following to an expert clinician. You can assume that they have a strong understanding of science and spend their day-to-day treating patients. Consider including the following as part of your slides:
-
What are the ESMO guideline recommendations for treatment of patients with advanced/metastatic TNBC with confirmed germline BRCA1/2 mutations? Describe the efficacy and safety data supporting these recommendations, and draw comparisons where appropriate. Helpful links:
-
What new therapies are in development for PD-L1 positive advanced/metastatic TNBC? Critique one or two ongoing clinical trials and discuss how the experimental treatment arm differs from the existing standard of care. Helpful links:
2) Prepare up to two slides to educate a patient to enable them to make an informed choice of therapy for first-line metastatic TNBC.
The slides should be created to communicate this information to the reader (i.e. clinician, patient) without the need for presentation. While we do not expect an art-worked deck, please consider the layout and appearance of your presentation, as well as the content.
