April & May Round Up
We’re back with another recap; this time, we have news from April and May.
The top 8 candidates from our “Medical Communications Competition” attended the VML Masterclass in April. They had the opportunity to meet professional medical writers and brush up their skills in medical writing. A big thank you to everyone who attended and VML for hosting this event.
In May, we wrapped up our “Build A Biotech Competition”, with the final being held at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, where our finalists presented their elevator pitches. In addition, we also held the ‘PhD to Startup’ seminar so thank you to everyone who attended and of course, our speakers from the day; Charles Veys, Abdul A., and Alice Mortiboy for their insightful talks.
Our finalists…
🥇AMR Mavericks [£15K, Biosynthetic Antifungal Drug Treatments]
🥈Muc-Vac [£5K, Plug & Display Vaccine Platform]
🥉Jack Bannister [£1K, Bioconjugation Methodologies]
Elevator Pitch:
🎖BioMend [Self-healing Materials]
Winning duo AMR Mavericks with judges and NWBI team.
An incredible thank you to our judges: Sara Holland, Graham Foxon, Adam Flanagan, and Aline Miller for their thoughtful evaluation of the presentations!
This competition would not have been possible without the support of the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Catalyst (IBIC) and Masood Entrepreneurship Centre (MEC), so a big thank you to them.
We also launched the “Consulting Case Competition”. Participants will have the chance to attend two online workshops to learn more about careers in consulting. They will also receive 1-1 advice to help them prepare for the final competition day on the 24th of June, where they will pitch their proposals to a panel of experts. We have Graham Foxon (Managing Director of Remap Consulting) and Isabel Rubio (Director of Access Infinity) as our speakers who will be joining us on the day.
We also have a brand new event coming up, namely “Inside Pharma” which will provide students with the opportunity to visit the manufacturing facilities and development labs, as well as networking with the commercial team at STADA. Applications for this close on the 13th of June and spaces are limited so be sure to get your applications in early!
Last but not least, a very special thank you to Akhila and Mon who have now stepped down as Co-Chairs of the NWBI, for all their hard work and commitment to the society over the years. And a warm welcome to Petr who will be stepping up from operations and taking on the responsibility of Co-Chair for the 2024-2025 academic year.
